The Day After Tomorrow
What if we are all facing a new ice age in the near future? This question haunts scientist Jack Hall. His research shows that global warming could lead to unexpected and catastrophic changes in the earth's climate. Having drilled holes in the ice of the Antarctic, Hall finds evidence that similar cataclysms occurred on our planet ten thousand years ago, and warns the authorities that the same thing will happen now if they do not act urgently. But his warnings came too late. First, Hall sees a piece of ice the size of Rhode Island break off from the Antarctic ice shelf. Then a series of powerful weather anomalies sweep across the globe: hail the size of grapefruits bombards Tokyo, a hurricane rages in Hawaii, snow hits Delhi, and monstrous tornadoes sweep through Los Angeles one after another. Professor Rapson's call from Scotland confirms Hall's worst fears: these natural disasters are harbingers of global change. The melting of ice at the poles has led to an excess supply of fresh water to the oceans and has upset the climate balance of the earth. Global warming has brought the earth to the brink of a new ice age. And it will come after one giant planet-wide storm. Jack warns the White House of an impending disaster, but is unable to help his son Sam, who is trapped with his friends in New York, at the mercy of floods and cold. Having found shelter in a library in Manhattan, Sam calls his father, who manages to warn his son not to leave his shelter under any circumstances. A large-scale evacuation of the US population to the south begins, and Jack rushes to the north to save his son. But even Jack doesn't know what else will happen - to him, to his son and to the entire planet.
