Four friends live in the New York Zoo: Alex the lion, Melman the giraffe, Gloria the hippopotamus and Marty the zebra. All animals were born in captivity, so they are quite happy with their lives. The only other zoo inhabitants who are not happy about living behind bars are the penguins. They plan to escape, but while digging an underground passage towards Antarctica, they accidentally end up in the enclosure of Marty the zebra. Having learned from the penguins that it is possible to escape from the zoo, Marty decides to go on an excursion to freedom. Frightened by the disappearance of their friend, Alex, Melman and Gloria go to save Marty. All four are caught and, under pressure from animal rights activists, sent to Africa to freedom. The penguins do not agree with this development of events. They don't need to go to Africa, they want to go to Antarctica. The penguins capture the ship and turn it towards the South Pole. During the turn, boxes with the main characters roll overboard. They wash up on the island of Madagascar. On this island inhabited by crazy lemurs, a lion, a giraffe, a zebra and a hippopotamus will have to learn about the real “wild life” and the “law of the jungle”.
