In August 1945, former tanker Ignat, whose passion is steam locomotives, returns from the war to a distant village called Krai. He learns that a German steam locomotive has been abandoned on a secluded island since pre-war times, and begins to restore it. But it turns out that the locomotive already has a name - “Gustav”, and there is an owner - Elsa, the daughter of a German engineer who was arrested at the beginning of the war. And for the villagers, obsessed with a dream, the free Ignat is a stranger. Shakespearean passions are boiling over, and not only people are involved in them, but also several locomotives, almost living beings, each with its own name...
