Shinji has almost resigned himself to piloting the combat robot Eva-01 when he meets new female pilots who genuinely enjoy their work: the mysterious British Marie and the feisty German Asuka. Asuka, like Shinji, moves into Misato's apartment and begins study with him and Rei in the same class. Also, Misato's old acquaintance Ryoji Kaji arrives at NERV, whom she is not very happy about, and while the guys successfully fight the Angels, everyone develops a difficult relationship.
