Japan. End of the 19th century. Captain Nathan Algren, an American military officer, is hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the first army of the Land of the Rising Sun in the modern art of warfare. The Emperor attempts to eradicate the ancient imperial warrior class of samurai in preparation for a more pro-Western government that supports foreign trade. Meanwhile, as a result of clashes with samurai, Algren finds himself in the center of a confrontation between two worlds and civilizations, where the only way to survive is to be guided by his own concept of honor.
