Petersburg at the end of the 19th century was gripped by a massive fascination with the occult sciences and esotericism. British medium Olivia Reed comes to the capital of the Russian Empire on tour and gathers crowds of people at her public spiritualistic sessions. At this time, a series of mysterious murders takes place in the city - the mutilated bodies of girls are found in different parts of the city. The investigation is being carried out by a young police colonel in Rostov and his assistant Ganin. With each new victim the case becomes more and more complicated. Rostov decides to turn to Olivia in the hope that her real or imaginary ability to summon the spirits of the dead can help get on the trail of the killer.
